Bonobos....where do I start? Les Bonobos....par ou commencer?

Bonobos along with chimpanzees are our closest relatives, we have 98.7% of our DNA in common. Bonobos live in the rainforest of the Congo Basin and can be found only to the south of the Congo river, in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), with Chimpanzees and Gorillas living to the north. Bonobos are an endangered species, it is believed there are between 20 000 and 60 000 left in the wild. Their numbers are dwindling due to deforestation, the bushmeat-trade and the pet-trade and at the current rate there will be none left within less than 50 years. Bonobos prime enemy is man.

Bonobos live by the basic principle "MAKE LOVE, NOT WAR!" They use sex in many different social contexts, principally to calm themselves and one another when tension is rising.

Les Bonobos et les Chimpanzés sont nos cousins les plus proches partageant 98.7% d'ADN commune avec nous. Les Bonobos vivent dans la forêt équatoriale du Bassin du Congo. On ne les trouve qu'au sud du fleuve Congo en République Démocratique du Congo (RDC), alors que les Chimpanzés et Gorilles habitent au nord du fleuve. Les Bonobos sont une espèce menacée, la population dans la nature est estimée entre 20 000 et 60 000. Leur nombre décroit à cause de la déforestation, le braconnage et la vente en tant qu'animaux de compagnie. A ce rythme, il n'y en aura plus dans moins de 50 ans. L'ennemi principal du Bonobo est l'homme!

Les Bonobos vivent avec le principe "FAITES L'AMOUR, PAS LA GUERRE!" Ils utilisent le sexe dans divers contextes sociaux, notamment pour se calmer, les uns les autres en cas de tension.

Ok, this is really the last day in Lola! Ok ceci est vraiment le dernier jour à Lola!

So having waited for two months for Salonga to give birth... the minx had her baby just 3 days before I got back on Thursday the 25th of June.. Hey, that's my mum's birthday!!!

Here are some pictures of the beauty whose sex we havn't yet confirmed (we believe it's a girl though) just 5 days old!

Après deux mois d'attente pour l'accouchement de salonga... la coquine a eu son bébé juste 3 jours avant mon retour, le jeudi 25 juin... Eh... c'est l'anniversaire de ma mère!!!

Voici des photos de ce petit bijou dont le sexe n'est pas encore confirmé (on pense que c'est une fille) à juste 5 jours!










A few days after my last departure for Basankusu a young female (bonobo) called "Antoine" was brought back to us from a town called Lodja where she had been kept by a Polish preist for a number of years... too many years in a tiny wooden cage. She finally made it to Lola and is settling into the nursery just fine. She is about 7 or 8 years old I believe and she is very gentle and calm. Her new name as of her arrival at Lola is Sankuru! Here she is!

Quelques jours après mon dernier départ pour Basankusu une jeune femelle (bonobo) nommé "Antoine" a été amenée à Lola en provenance d'une ville, Lodja, où un curé polonais la gardait depuis de nombreuses années dans une toute petite cage en bois. Elle est enfin arrivée à Lola et s'habitue très bien dans la nursery. Elle doit avoir 7 ou 8 ans je crois bien et elle est très douce et calme. Désormais son nom ici à Lola est Sankuru! La voici!
