Ok, So my plans have now changed…again. Having left the forest two weeks ago and having survived the shipwreck to make it back to Kinshasa, I am now back in Lola ya Bonobo, the bonobo sanctuary where I started in October 2008. It is lovely to be back and I am feeling great even though things here at the sanctuary are not going great for the bonobos. We are just about getting out of an epidemic of a flu type virus that took the lives of 4 bonobos, baby Nkumu, Mixa, Lodja and Kindu. It is tough, when little Kindu didn’t come back to the night enclosure we all set out the next morning to try to find him. A group of about 10 of us patrolled the forest, but no luck, the next day his lifeless little body was found. Now we can ask oursleves the question, had he already gone when we searched for him, or might we have been able to save him had we found him ? Not a good time for Lola. And so yes we believed that things were picking up, but last night Vanessa noticed that Leki, a little male born to Semendwa just 2 weeks ago is not a well boy. His breathing is very fast, he is coughing and judging by the size of Semendwa’s breasts he is not suckling very much. We can only hope that he will pull through but there is very little we can do. Taking a baby away from his mum so small is very risky, and medicating him through his mum’s breast milk is no use if he is not suckling ! So I am not sure what the plan is. Lola took in a new arrival the other day, a little female called Kinshasa. She was flown to Kinshasa last weekend from Mbandaka about 500Km away after being offficially seized from poachers, we think she is probably about 5 years old and we are glad to say that she has all her fingers and toes, has no physical wounds and is a lively little thing. When Valery and two new visitors went to pick her up it took two hours of her playing catch before they managed to pick her up and get her in the car, where she then showed a really relaxed attitude, quite a change from the trauma that some of the babies clearly go through and the distressed and mistreated state they arrive in. So welcome Kinshasa, as soon as here medical analysis results come back she should be able to join the other terrors in the nursery !
So on a lighter note, since my arrival I have been offering my translation services to Claudine and so have been asked to stay on for a while to do some work for her and the sanctuary. So I won’t be coming home right yet. I have also been asked by Professor Dr. Brian Hare from Duke University in the States to be an assistant to his PhD student who is coming to do research in May. I’m really excited about that. It will be a great experience along with all the amazing experiences I have allready had so far.

Little update… bad news… Little Leki died just about an hour ago, just 2 weeks old.

OK, donc mes plans ont encore changé ! Ayant quitté la forêt il y deux semaines et ayant survécu au naufrage pour enfin arriver à Kinshasa, je me trouve maintenant au sanctuaire de Lola ya Bonobo, là où j’ai commencé en octobre 2008. Ca me fait vraiment plaisir d’être de retour et je me sens très bien malgré le fait que les choses soient dures en ce moment, surtout pour les bonobos. On sort juste la tête de l’eau suite à une épidémie d’un virus un peu comme la grippe qui a causé la mort de 4 bonobos, le bébé Nkumu (photo en haut de la page a droite), Mixa, Lodja et Kindu. C’est dur ! Quand le petit Kindu n’est pas revenu à l’enclos de nuit on est entré dans l’enclos le lendemain matin pour essayer de le trouver. On était plus d’une dizaine de personnes et on a patrouillé la forêt mais on ne l’a pas trouvé, le lendemain son petit corps sans vie a été retrouvé. Maintenant on se pose la question, était-il déjà mort quand on le cherchait ? Est-ce qu'on aurait pu le sauver si on l’avait retrouvé ? Pas un bon moment pour Lola ! Et donc oui, là les choses avait l’air de se calmer mais hier soir Vanessa a remarqué que le petit Leki, un petit mâle mis au monde par Semendwa il y a à peine deux semaines, ne va pas bien. Sa respiration est très rapide, il tousse et vu la taille des seins de Semendwa, il ne tête pas beaucoup. On ne peut qu'espérer qu’il va s’en sortir mais il n’y a pas grand chose qu’on puisse faire. Retirer un bébé de son âge à sa mère c’est très risqué, et le traiter par le biais du lait maternel, ça ne marche que s'il tête. Donc je ne sais pas exactement ce qu'on va pouvoir faire. Ce que je sais c’est que Lola a besoin de dons, tous dons, grands ou petits que vous pouvez faire seront bienvenus. Pour faire un don suivez un des deux liens ci-dessous.

Il y a eu une nouvelle arrivée à Lola lundi, une petite femelle qu’on a nommée Kinshasa. Elle a été mise dans un vol pour Kinshasa au départ de Mbandaka à environ 500km d’ici après qu'elle ait été officiellement confisquée à un braconnier. On pense qu’elle doit avoir environ 5 ans et on est heureux de pouvoir dire qu’elle a tous ses doigts et orteils et qu'elle n’a pas de blessures physiques et puis elle est bien vive ! Quand Valery et deux nouveau visiteurs sont allés la chercher, elle a d’abord joué au chat et à la souris pendant 2 heures avec eux avant d'acdcepter qu'on la prenne pour monter en voiture; une fois en voiture elle était très relax. C’est une bonne chose et ça change des petits qui subissent de si graves traumatismes qu’ils arrivent blessés et dans un état de détresse totale. Donc bienvenue à Kinshasa qui une fois les résultats de ses analyses médicales reçus elle devrait pouvoir rejoindre les autres petits à la nursery !

Donc sinon, depuis mon arrivée j’ai proposé mes services de traduction à Claudine et donc on m’a demandé de rester ici un moment pour pouvoir faire du travail pour Claudine et le Sanctuaire. Du coup, je ne rentre pas en France pour l'instant. Par ailleurs, le Professeur Dr. Brian Hare de Duke University aux Etats-Unis m'a dmandé d’être assitante de recherche pour un de ses étudiants qui vient faire des recherches pour son doctorat au mois de mai. Je suis super contente d’avoir cette opportunité. Ca sera une super expérience qui s’ajoutera à toutes les merveilleuses expériences que j’ai déjà faites jusqu’à maintenant.
